360˚ PINHOLES
2005
DIGITAL PRINTS FROM BLACK AND WHITE FILM, HOMEMADE PINHOLE CAN CAMERA

Since its creation, photography has had to prove its role in the art world. The main criticism being that because the image was created with a camera instead of the human hand, it could not be held to the same standard as drawing or painting. Using that as a starting point, this project questions how an image could be made if only the camera were involved.

Using a paint can with six pinholes around the circumference, images were created by placing the camera in locations where a human could not physically go. Whether inside a grill at the park or under a wild shrub growing out of a concrete dam, each image offers a unique perspective of a singular area.

Exposed at the exact same time, the image creates an overlapping complete view, capturing a scene without the tainted perspective of a photographer selecting what to include or exclude from the frame.
